The National Geographic Magazine, December 1957
This issue contains about 25 pages of content inspired by the October 1957 launch of
Sputnik 1, including an article titled How Man-Made Satellites Can Affect Our
Lives by Joseph Kaplan (page 791), and two short pieces called National
Geographic Satellite Finder (p. 809) and New Chart for Watchers of the
Skies by Allan C. Fisher Jr (p. 811). The Russian space program does not figure
prominently in the articles, but Sputnik was definitely the spark behind these attempts to
answer the public's questions about the impact that satellites would have on the quality
of life and the states of various sciences.
In addition to a few brief mentions of "the pioneering artificial satellite," there are two
photos of Sputnik 1's spent casing streaking through the night sky, one of
which can be seen at right. Note that to avoid breaking the binding of the magazine, this
image was photographed rather than scanned; luckily the original wasn't all that
great, so very little was lost in the translation :)
