Cigarette trading cards from a set honoring great moments in space; Laika (first earthling in space) on the left, Yuri Gagarin (first man in space) on the right. Laika died in space; Gagarin returned sucessfully but was tragically killed when his MiG crashed during training in 1968.
Laika's card reads:
Laika was the name given to the Soviet dog shot 100 miles above the earth at a speed of 18,000 m.p.h. in Sputnik II. As this satellite had no braking system it could not therefore re-enter the earth's atmosphere. During the ten-day flight Laika's reactions were continuously recorded. She was fed regularly by pellet foods, and water, under pressure, to drink. Laika died painlessly when her air supply ran out.
Major Gagarin's card reads:
Major Yuri Alexeyavich Gagarin, the world's first man into space, was born on March 8, 1934, in the U.S.S.R. He became a Soviet best pilot in 1957 and volunteered for space resesarch work. On April 12, 1961 he took off in the orbital space-ship Vostok, and circled the earth in 89 minutes at a speed of 18,000 m.p.h.
